🆘 Don’t Panic—Here’s What You Need to Know
Orthodontic emergencies can be stressful—but they’re often more manageable than they seem. Whether it’s a broken bracket, poking wire, or lost aligner, this guide will help you stay calm and take the right steps until you can visit one of our offices.
Let’s walk through the most common scenarios and what you should do in each case.
1. 😬 Broken Bracket
What it is: A bracket that has come loose from the tooth but is still attached to the wire.
What to do:
-
Leave it in place if it’s not causing pain.
-
Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges.
-
Call your orthodontist to schedule a repair—this isn’t usually urgent but should be fixed soon.
2. 🧵 Poking or Loose Wire
What it is: A wire that’s sticking out and irritating your cheek or gums.
What to do:
-
Try using a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab to push it flat.
-
Cover the area with wax if it still pokes.
-
If necessary, use sanitized nail clippers to carefully snip the wire (only if you’re comfortable doing so).
-
Contact your orthodontist for an adjustment.
3. 😲 Lost or Broken Aligner
What it is: You misplaced or damaged your clear aligner.
What to do:
-
If you just started a new set, try wearing the previous one to hold your progress.
-
If close to the next set, ask your orthodontist if you can move ahead.
-
Always notify your provider to stay on track.
4. 🦷 Soreness or Irritation
What it is: Discomfort after adjustments or when beginning treatment.
What to do:
-
Use over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
-
Rinse with warm salt water to soothe your mouth.
-
Stick to soft foods for a day or two.
This is normal and usually resolves within a few days.
5. 🛑 When It’s a True Emergency
Most orthodontic issues aren’t urgent, but you should call us immediately if:
-
A wire is cutting your cheek or gums and causing bleeding
-
A bracket or appliance is swallowed
-
You’re in severe, ongoing pain
Your comfort and safety are our top priority.
