The traditional shape of the donut with the hole in the middle is credited to a man named Hanson Gregory, who claimed to have invented it in 1847. He allegedly punched a hole in the center of his fried dough to ensure that it cooked evenly.
National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of June in the United States, and it was created in 1938 to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies,” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.
